Fan Voting for This Year's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame Nominees:

…and Small Faces/Faces are way back in the pack. They need YOUR help to defeat Donna Summer and Guns ‘n Roses in this internet poll that will have no actual impact on their actual induction.

The Faces got nominated for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Three brief points:

You are probably like “what? They’re not already in the Hall of Fame?” They are not. And that is a shame, though not a surprise, as this was something me and the dudes figured out during 2009’s epic All Faces Weekend.

Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood are both already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - twice (both for their work with The Jeff Beck Group, and Stewart of his solo stuff and Wood as a Rolling Stone). Kenney Jones might be in if you count his stint with The Who. As Dave pointed out to me in IM, this leaves only Ian McLagan and Ronnie Lane out, and they won’t be quite the draw for voters. And this is sad because both of those dudes deserve to be in there - Ronnie Lane on his own merits and McLagan not only for The Faces, but also in light of the cool work he’s done with other acts (including the Stones).

While you might hate to admit it - since he turned into a giant cartoon version of himself - Rod Stewart really does deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times.

Anyway, despite the odds, I’ve got my fingers crossed.

We’ve had a lot of fun here this weekend.

We wondered why our heroes have been overlooked by rock’n’roll’s “governing body.” We uncovered some Minneapolis connections. We celebrated the heart and soul of Faces. We forced strangers to join us. We listened to a lot of music. We only made a little fun of Rod Stewart.

Unfortunately, all good things gotta come to an end. We hope these three days of bleary-eyed tall tales, booze-drenched mischief and endless I-IV-V progressions opened your eyes to or gave you a new appreciation for the rollicking boogie circus that was Faces. We hope you keep this rock’n’roll spirit alive for days, months, years.

But, we don’t want to send you back to the dull work week on a melancholy note—Cheerio! Turn off the lights! Tuck in early! Enjoy the old grind! No, we want to leave you with one last piece of Faces glory and a bit of hope to whet your rock’n’roll exploration appetite.

We’ve decided to host another “All _____ Weekend” sometime in the near future and hopefully many after that. We have a few new ideas simmering that we think will be pretty cool. Now, we’ve already picked our next subject (hint ahead!) but what other artists should we dig into?

*Raina has been pumping the All Faces Weekend spirit into Facebook, which is why you haven’t noticed her on this Tumblr. In regards to her above photo, she would like to add:

Fwiw, “Stay With Me” is on the iPod. Because, for me, it’s one of those early childhood “OH MY GOD THIS IS ABOUT SEX” songs. This is the sort of education that one gets from hippie parents with a small, but high-quality record collection.

For the record, we still feel like that whenever we crank the Faces.

I’ve always wanted a time machine because I have a dream. In that dream I visit 1976, strike up a casual relationship with a flighty but intelligent Los Angeles lass, and make her wear this t-shirt.

It’s a simple dream. I’m a simple man.

Click play on this video. Close your eyes. Nope, that’s not the Faces, but the mostly-forgotten 70s/80s Cleveland power-pop band, Artful Dodger. Not all of their stuff sounds quite this much like Rod, Woody, Ronnie, Kenny, and Ian, but it’s well worth checking out if you can track it down (it’s mostly out-of-print). Obviously, Ben and Tony haven’t come even close to scraping the bottom of the Faces discography on this site, but I submit this as an amusing curiosity, nonetheless.

I think to make any AllFacesWeekend complete we really ought pay a tribute and thanks to the Great Steve Marriott for abruptly walking out on the Small Faces thus, giving us, if not the hardest working band from England, easily the hardest drinking. Ladies and gentlemen let’s thank Steve Marriott for giving us Rod, Ron, Kenny, Ian, & Ronnie!

Neil, our resident Ronnie Lane expert, reporting in from the field (aka Indiana). Not that we hate Small Faces around here by any means, but…it ain’t All Small Faces Weekend, right?

Sure, these guys did shambolic, alcohol-fueled bar tunes better than anyone, but it’s all too easy to overlook their few, but surprisingly effective, attempts at early 70s arena rock. “Flying” is the obvious example, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that ellipsis-happy Ian McLagan chose it to lead off both the Good Boys… When They’re Asleep greatest hits collection and the Five Guys Walk Into a Bar… box set. Lyrically, “Flying” plays more like a coda to the rest of their catalog than anything – an uneasy post-jail meditation on the promise of returning home. The narrator’s spent his time getting drunk and into trouble, but now he’s served his time, and he’s going to put things right somehow.

But these are The Faces we’re talking about, so, of course, redemption isn’t the point at all. It’s as if McLagan knew we just had to get this heavy business out of the way before things headed back to the pub. Such is the mythology of the band, and McLagan is happy to let it stand.

But rather than merely a false start on either set, it’s the hint of a path not taken, perhaps where The Faces weren’t just known for gloriously tawdry R&B moves like “Stay With Me,” “Too Bad,” and “You’re So Rude” or even introspective moments like “Debris” and “Ooh La La,” but could give Zeppelin or the Who a run for their money in the epic department, as well as the alcohol intake department.

(See also their wild cover of Dylan’s “Wicked Messenger,” another slightly out-of-character, dead serious, slow-burning rocker that was sequenced first – the first song on their first album, in fact.)

Baby, I'm amazed

Sometimes it takes a cover version to get you to really listen to a song you thought you didn’t like by an artist you thought you didn’t respect.

Exhibit A: Blake Morgan’s electric cover of Paul McCartney’s Maybe I’m Amazed. I was never a huge McCartney fan — Lennon and Harrison cornered all the gravitas in the band. But somehow I knew that wasn’t totally fair; Paul was responsible for some awesome Beatles tunes. His solo career, however, was another story. Usually light, often downright insipid. He should have been jailed for Live And Let Die. Maybe I’m Amazed doesn’t sink to those levels, but I never took much notice of it.

Until I heard Blake Morgan’s version stream through my headphones, courtesy of Cush’s Things I Say podcast.

(The rest of this album is pretty good, by the way. Like this track, it’s got a potent power pop groove — hooky melodies, chunky guitar riffs and dynamite vocals.)

Getting back to Maybe I’m Amazed, the iTunes Music Store sells about 40 different versions (including a couple of karaoke tracks). So I guess this song speaks to other musicians. Or perhaps they felt McCartney did a lame job of his own tune, easy to make it their own.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Exhibit B — this 1972 performance by the Faces. That’s Ronnie Lane and an astonishingly young and robust Rod Stewart on the vocals. The searing guitar is provided by Ron Wood (lately of the Stones), who doesn’t even appear in the video until more than four minutes in. And the drummer is Kenny Jones, who took over for Keith Moon in The Who. Man, that was a hell of a band. You can get a pretty complete education on Faces by downloading the 19-track The Best Of Faces: Good Boys When They’re Asleep (oh, how I love the title) for a mere $8.49 at Amazon. Maybe I’m Amazed was featured on Faces’ second album, Long Player, released in 1971.

In defense of Sir Paul, I kinda like his latest project, The Fireman — especially Sing The Changes. Very U2-like.

We completely agree. And we like to think you can add a Faces PhD to that great education after a few sessions right here at All Faces Weekend.

Marc Perlman: Paul went to the same Faces concert I did. I was pretty young and I’m fairly sure Paul was, too. If you’ve ever seen the way the Faces make an auditorium seem like a pub, you’d understand why I bring this up.

“Silicone Grown”

It’s about 4:45am, Sunday, on this All Faces Weekend. You may have been jolted from a Bad Dream.

I just walked through the door after a night that included a Dinkytown bonfire, making eyes at an unreceptive expat NYC ballerina, expensive Scotch, and a couple red cups of free keg beer.

I smell like campfire smoke and Canadian Club. After I finish writing this, I’m going to stumble into the basement and wrangle a Les Paul into sloppy and neighbor-aggravating approximations of Ron Wood licks.

In tonight’s Bad Dream, I opened my eyes to four charming young lads lip-syncing a bouncy tune. I smiled and sat back to bask in their sunny vibe. “Blargle doble rangar reedle,” babbled an angry old British man with large spectacles, who scares me! Before I could recoil and grab for something heavy and bludgeon-y, he was gone, and the charming young singer was replaced by a tall blond rooster and a rough-and-tumble guy with a shiny guitar.
